If you have a garage door, odds are that over time, you’ve heard a number of garage door myths.

If you’re thinking of upgrading your garage door opener, Chamberlain has debunked some of those misconceptions so you can make an informed decision when purchasing a new garage door opener.

Myth 1 – You have to replace your door to automate it
Many believe that in order to automate a garage door, an entirely new door must be purchased. However, if an existing garage door is in good working condition, it likely won’t need replacing!

Check if your door is a roller, sectional or tilt door, head to Bunnings and speak to the team about the best solution for your needs – a new Chamberlain DIY opener can be installed in less than two hours!

Myth 2 – Each garage door needs a different remote
If you happen to have multiple garage doors openers from different brands, it can be frustrating and confusing. Luckily, the Chamberlain Universal Remote is designed to seamlessly integrate your garage door systems into one. Working with all major garage door opener brands, Chamberlain’s Universal Remote can operate with two different branded garage doors.

Myth 3 – The garage door can’t be part of the smart home
With smart home connectivity on the rise, many homeowners don’t realise that the garage door can be monitored and controlled from your smartphone. Chamberlain’s myQ products (HandyLift myQ and PowerLift myQ) are designed with the ultimate innovative technology, featuring real-time notifications, set and forget scheduling and smart-home integrations.

Myth 4 – Garage door openers are maintenance free
For safety reasons, it’s important to test your garage opener by performing a safety reversal test. This can easily be undertaken at home:

  • Place a 40mm object under the door (like a block of wood)
  • Operate the door to come in contact with the object
  • Door should bounce back in less than a second (0.75 second)
  • If this does NOT occur, home owners should contact Chamberlain DIY on 1800 665 438

Myth 5 – All openers purchased in Australia are compliant
It would be a fair assumption that all doors and openers bought and installed in Australia are compliant with Australian standards. However, this is not always the case.  Models that are ten years old or older may not meet current safety standards. Homeowners should always check if their model is compliant with current safety standards by conducting a safety reversal test and ensure your model has the Regulatory Compliance Mark.
