How to: Spookify your garage

The spooky season is right around the corner. After two years of lockdowns, Halloween is the perfect excuse to celebrate, connect with your neighbours and have some fun with your garage!

While the theme of the holiday is scary, your preparation doesn’t have to be. That’s why we’ve put together Chamberlain’s top tips and themes to decorate your garage, to make sure your home is the talk of the street this Halloween!

Witching hour

The perfect witches’ cave has toil and trouble written all over it! Scattering battery-operated candles around your driveway, hanging green fairy lights, and hiding a smoke machine out of sight can set the ominous mood you’re looking for.

If you’re feeling creative, why not leave the trick or treaters spellbound with some simple DIY craft? Create magic potions by filling jars with coloured water, bundle twigs from your garden into a wicked broomstick, or turn a plant pot into a boiling witch’s cauldron.

For the finishing touch, go a step further and use a Bluetooth speaker to play a soundtrack of eerie tones and cackling witches.

Keen on detective shows? You can take a peek behind the police tape by creating your own (pretend!) crime scene at home.

Will you create the site of a hushed UFO landing or the remnants of a brawl? A robbery or something more sinister?

Add a sense of danger and mystery but wrapping police or hazard tape around the outside of your property – the neighbours won’t know what to think!

Elevate your investigation by leaving clues behind the caution tape – think fake blood dripping from your letterbox, muddy footprints along the garden path disappearing behind the garage door, or chalk outlines on your driveway.

Haunted graveyard

There’s nothing quite as unsettling as a resting place for the dead – so why not make your own!

To build your home cemetery, you can choose to go simple with homemade crosses stuck in the lawn. Or, if you’re looking for something truly terrifying, add some skeleton arms and headstones to your garden beds to simulate the rise of the undead. You could also consider adding spiders crawling along the driveway, bats swooping from your gutters, or projecting ghosts onto your garage door.

Keeping it safe

While decorating your home for Halloween is a lot of fun, it’s also important to remember safety.

When it comes to your garage, make sure that none of your decorations get in the way of your door nor interfere with any of its safety systems. To keep safe while you’re being spooky, ensure that no raised objects are hanging on or over the door.

Also, make sure the garage remote, chemicals and tools are stored out of reach from children, and anchor any free standing structures to the walls.
